2010 Arthur Ashe Kids' Day

Arhtur Ashe Kids Day

Arthur Ashe Kids' Day, on the weekend prior to the start of the U.S. Open, has now been a tradition for over fifteen years, but it’s one that continues to be worth celebrating and honoring.  Today, many tennis fans, especially kids, do not know who Arthur Ashe is nor know of all the wonderful work he accomplished off the tennis court let alone

the titles he won between the lines.  This year the tennis stars were out again in force as Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Kim Clijsters, Novak Djokovic played tennis exhibition matches and skill drills inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.  At the same time, the sunny afternoon featured all sorts of tennis clinics, skill drills and games around the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, e.g. The Hess Express Obstacle Course, Nike Tennis and skill activities, IBM Hit the Spot! radar guns to test the speed of kids' serves, Olympus Capture It All, QuickStart Tennis, as well as Player Autographs, Face-Painting, Hair Braiding, Juggling & Plate Spinning, Stilt-Walkers, Balloon Artists and more.

Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day seeks to expand the audience beyond die-hard tennis fans and always features well-known musical acts as part of the stadium show.  2010 was no exception with the Jonas Brothers returning to perform at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, as well as musical sets by Demi Lovato, Shontelle and even the Bryan Brothers Band!  The festivities were hosted by Adrienne Bailon and Quddus and also featured special celebrity guests, e.g. Nick Cannon.  At the Hess Get Pumped Up Festival Stage on the grounds of the Tennis Center, rising musical acts Burnham, School Gyrls, Savvy, Alexis Jordan, Cody Simpson performed.

Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, which is presented by Hess, honors Arthur Ashe and continues his mission of using tennis as a means to instill in kids the values of humanitarianism, leadership and academic excellence.  A portion of the proceeds from Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day benefits the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network, which was established by Ashe, Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder in 1969 with the mission of developing the character of young people through tennis and education.
