2010 US Open Tennis Green Initiatives

Continuing its “green initiatives” that started a couple years ago, the 2010 U.S. Open tennis tournament is working to set the standard for a major sporting event in terms of “being green”, i.e. eco-friendly and environmentally sensitive with help from the
National Resources Defense Council. Given the hundreds of thousands of tennis fans attending the U.S. Open, let’s hope that these green initiatives become “habit-forming” at home and at work in the years ahead.
There are PSAs, which are airing on the large videoboards around the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center featuring Alec Baldwin, Bob and Mike Bryan, as well as Venus Williams about “smart green” shopping, transportation and recycling options. Reusable shopping nags will be sold on the grounds and paper products such as napkins, tickets and copy paper, will be produced from at least 30% post-consumer waste. The dining experience will also be “green” since utensils, plates and cups will be produced from bio-based materials and cooking oil will be collected to be used in the future for biodiesel fuels.
Around the grounds of the U.S. Open, there is an extensive recycling program for all plastic, cans, cardboard, glass, as well as the 18,000-20,000 Wilson tennis ball cans that will be recycled. The actual 60,000 used tennis balls will be reused for programs at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and later donated to community youth programs.
In terms of transportation, 60% of the Mercedes player transportation will be via hybrid vehicles and tennis fans will be encouraged to use mass transport, e.g. the subway, to travel to/from the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open’s energy provider, Constellation Energy, will supply green e-certified wind renewable energy certificates to match the electrical consumption generated during the 2010 U.S. Open.
