Maria Sharapova is Engaged!

Last week, the news spread that Russian Grand Slam champion, Maria Sharapova, 23, was engaged to Slovenian, Los Angeles Lakers basketball player, Sasha Vujacic, who is 26. Interestingly, the news came out via quotes from Vujacic and confirmation from
Sharapova’s agent. Sharapova, a former World Number One and Wimbledon, Australian Open and U.S. Open champion, currently ranked 17th, has struggled a bit since coming back from shoulder surgery two years ago. According to press reports, Vujacic formally proposed to Sharapova on the one year anniversary of when they were first introduced at a friend’s barbeque.
No wedding date has been set, but with her engagement at the age of twenty-three, Sharapova joins several other tennis stars who married in their twenties, e.g. Roger Federer, Kim Clijsters and Andy Roddick. So far it doesn’t appear that marriage has had any negative impact on these players’ careers. Given his position with the Los Angeles Lakers, it seems unlikely that Vujacic will travel very much with Sharapova, except possibly during the summers and vice versa with Maria spending the majority of her time away on the tennis circuit. Marriage is a life-changing moment in most people’s lives and time will tell how it affects Maria Sharapova’s tennis career.
