Roger Federer Versus Andy Murray

It’s been an interesting rivalry so far between Roger Federer and Andy Murray. After today’s win by Federer 6-4, 6-2 at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Murray still leads overall 8-6 in matches. In 2010, Federer and Murray are tied with two wins each. In Grand Slam
matches, Federer has won both, i.e. in the 2008 U.S. Open final and in the 2010 Australian Open final. In all finals, Federer leads 3-2 so far.
For a player considered the greatest player of all time by most tennis pundits, having a losing record against anyone must be frustrating. For many years, Federer also had a losing record against the extremely talented Argentine, David Nalbandian, although Federer is now ahead 10-8, but they haven’t played since 2008. Federer still trails Rafael Nadal 7-14 in their rivalry, but Nadal has won so many Grand Slam titles that it’s a different situation. It’s a fascinating rivalry between Murray and Federer because while Murray has yet to win a Grand Slam title nor beat Federer in a “big match”, Murray seems to “bother” Federer on some level. There’s sometimes a slight edge in Federer’s comments about Murray, perhaps because he still trails in their overall rivalry. Over the next few years, we’ll see where the final tally lands, but Murray needs to win one when it really matters… because that’s what people will remember most.
