WTA's New Logo

The WTA, which is the leading global sport for women, recently launched a new logo. The introduction of the new design coincides with Sony Ericsson's shift to being a lead global sponsor rather than the title sponsor of the entire Tour. The new logo
also signals the shift from including the word "Tour" in the name/logo. The logo aims to be modern and reflective of the excitement and athleticism which has driven women's pro tennis over the past forty years. The dark purple and reddish hues are bright and positive and the yellow dot in the letter "A" does subtly evokes the image of a tennis ball.

On the men's side, the ATP World Tour's logo does include the word "Tour", as well as an image of a player with his arms raised in triumph. Past iterations of the WTA's logo also included a player which is absent from the new logo. Many sport league logos include some sport-specific icon, e.g. the NBA, MLB and LPGA have player images, the NFL has a football, the PGA has golf clubs, but the NHL simply has the letters in a "shield". The new WTA logo is attractive. Over time, we'll learn whether this new incarnation of the WTA logo successfully reflects and builds the WTA's brand around the world.
