Djokovic Bags His Second Australian Open Title

Novak Djokovic put on a powerful offensive performance to win his second Australian Open and Grand Slam title by beating Andy Murray 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the 2011 Australian Open. It was the third time Murray has lost in straight sets in a Grand Slam final (he lost to Roger Federer at the U.S. Open and Australian Open in the past).
There were many who worried that Djokovic would enter the Australian Open fatigued because he had such a short off-season after leading Serbia to the Davis Cup in early December. Instead, Djokovic’s confidence was boosted by that the emotional Davis Cup victory at home in Belgrade and he’s clearly still riding that “wave” of positive emotion. At Melbourne Park this year, Djokovic’s parents and brothers were not in his supporters box, but he still thanked them from the podium after his victory.
Djokovic, who has hovered in the shadow of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, the past few years, is now poised to move up the rankings if he can stay healthy and maintain his strong form. Djokovic, who outplayed Roger Federer in the semis, has cleaned up his service motion/problems from a year ago and steadied his strong forehand, as well as seeming to be even fitter than in the past. Djokovic played a potent combination of aggressive baseline play coupled with amazing retrieving and solid serving. Murray was not sharp off the ground and especially with his first serve, but the match was more about Djokovic’s strong play. Novak will be tough on all surfaces and so it will interesting to see if he can challenge for the French Open title come springtime…
