Federer and Nadal... Evert and Navratilova

Much has been made recently about the friendship and mutual respect that World Number One, Rafael Nadal, and current World Number Two, Roger Federer share. In professional sports, it’s rare for the top players to be friends, especially in a non-team
sport such as tennis even though players share the same locker-room week after week. However, Rafa and Roger, despite the differences in their ages, backgrounds, playing styles and lifestyles seem to genuine like each other and enjoy spending time together.
There is a precedent for this unique friendship at the top of sport and it actually was/is also in the tennis world. Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova who battled against each other in Grand Slam finals and tons of other tournaments over multiple decades also developed a strong friendship during their playing days, which has also lasted into their retirements. Chris and Martina may also seem like opposites similar to Federer and Nadal and perhaps that is a partial explanation for why they all do get along so well… opposites do “attract”! Regardless of the reasons which the general public will never truly understand about these unique friendships, they have been, and will be, beneficial for the sport of tennis. In the end, we all “win” from them...
