2011 Sony Ericsson Open Wildcards

The second of the “Baby Slams”, the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne (Miami), Florida, is underway. The tournament recently announced the recipients of the coveted wildcard slots in the main draw. The list includes mostly promising young
players, but a mix of Americans and foreigners. Clearly, the tournament is both trying to support American tennis, as well as to attract tennis fans and sell tickets!
Men:
• James Blake – former quarterfinalist and 4th ranked payer on the comeback from injuries
• Milos Raonic – fast-rising, tall, hard-serving Canadian who reached the round of 16 at the 2011 Australian Open and won his first title last month
• Ryan Harrison – talented eighteen year old American who lost a tight match against Roger Federer at the BNP Paribas Open
• Jack Sock – promising young American who won the 2010 U.S. Open Junior Boys’ title
• Bernard Tomic – tall, smooth-hitting Australian who pushed Rafael Nadal at times during their match at the 2011 Australian Open
Women:
• Dinara Safina – former quarterfinalist and Number One ranked player on the comeback trail
• Sorana Cirstea – former French Open quarterfinalist and 23rd ranked player
• Sabine Lisicki – reached the round of 16 in 2008 and career-high ranking of 22nd in 2009
• Heather Watson – eighteen year old British player who won the 2009 U.S. Open Junior Girls’ title
• Coco Vandeweghe – tall nineteen year old American who qualified for the 2011 Australian Open
• Madison Keys – rising young American player
• Petra Martic – Croatian who qualified for 2011 Australian Open and reached the second round
• Ajla Tomljanovic – rising seventeen year old Croatian player who won her second Futures tournament this month
Men:
