Federer on First at French Open

Clay court baseline

For the first time since 2004, Roger Federer played a match at 11 am at the French Open and he was on the "secondary" show court, i.e. Court Suzanne Lenglen.  Every tournament creates the daily match schedule by considering several factors, but usually

the two dominant variables are the "marquee value" of a player and any "hometown" players.  The French Open, like the other Grand Slams, also considers the wishes of the major TV networks covering the tournament who pay millions for the rights to air the event.

Unlike the Australian Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon, the French Open has many players, especially men, to feature on the show courts, especially during the first week.  Therefore, some top stars are relegated to the third, fourth and fifth show courts.  As a result, World Number One, Caroline Wozniacki, was originally assigned to an outside secondary show court for her first match and 2009 U.S. Open champion, Juan Martin del Potro, played his first round match on Court 1 and his second round match on Court 2.  Meanwhile, six French players were scheduled on the two main show courts, Court Philippe Chatrier and Court Suzanne Lenglen today!  In the end, Federer won in straight sets in less than ninety minutes defeating a French wildcard, Maxime Teixeira!
