USTA Playoffs for 2011 French Open Wildcards

In late April, the USTA held wildcard playoffs in Florida for the coveted main draw wildcards that the French Tennis Federation gives to one American man and one American woman for the main draw at the French Open. The USTA provides the same
for French players at the U.S. Open. The single elimination format, which featured six men and six women, is in keeping with the USTA’s goal of making players earn the right to the wildcards. The following players competed in the playoffs.

WOMEN
• Julia Boserup
• Beatrice Capra
• Lauren Davis
• Irina Falconi
• Madison Keys
• Grace Min
Twenty-year-old, Irina Falconi of Atlanta, Georgia, defeated Julia Boserup 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the final to earn the coveted wildcard slot. It will be Falconi’s third consecutive appearance in a Grand Slam. On the men’s side, twenty-three-year-old, Tim Smyczek of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, beat Donald Young in the final round 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, to earn his second consecutive appearance in a Grand Slam.
