2011 Wimbledon Fashion Review

In keeping with tradition, “Predominantly white” tennis attire is being worn by all the players competing in The Championships Wimbledon, 2011 at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Therefore, tennis clothing designers at the major tennis brands, i.e.
Nike, adidas, Lacoste, Fila and Sergio Tacchini, are rather limited in what they can producer for players. Our team of fashion experts has (still) reviewed the designs worn by the players this year to see which ones are the most memorable. Unfortunately, it is a rather uninspired year following the trend from the other Grand Slams this year, i.e. the French Open and the Australian Open.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are wearing Nike dresses with subtle trim on certain seams, i.e. blue on Serena and gold on Maria. Svetlana Kuznetsova has red trim on her Fila top and skirt, while the Lacoste dress worn by Samantha Stosur features multi-colored trim. World Number One, Caroline Wozniacki, is wearing a Stella McCartney for adidas dress with a ruffled collar that is the same style, albeit in white that she has been wearing all year. Meanwhile, other adidas players have lime green or red adidas stripes on their shirts. Venus Williams’ “jumper” garnered rather negative feedback although it did generate attention, as did Bethanie Mattek-Sands Alex Noble (Lady Gaga’s designer) outfits.
On the men’s side, Nike has given Rafael Nadal a basic collarless shirt with subtle blue or red circular designs under the arms while Roger Federer continues his classic look with subtle dark green piping. British hope, Andy Murray, is wearing adidas with subtle blur and green stripes and collar trim. Novak Djokovic’s Sergio Tacchini outfits are very “old-school”, classic Tacchini almost ala Fred Perry with subtle trim around the collar and down the side of the shorts. Andy Roddick’s Lacoste shirt and shorts actually were completely white without any colored trim. All in all, no outfits from Wimbledon this year which will most likely make any “best-dressed” lists although possibly Alex Noble’s designs might make it into the Wimbledon Museum one day, but we shall see about that!
