Being British at Wimbledon

I’m embarrassed to admit that I called someone in New York City “British” recently, because of her accent, and she corrected me that she was “English”! Well, at Wimbledon, this year and every year… it’s all about the “Brits”! The tennis fans are starved for a
Wimbledon champion and despite the deep runs by Tim Henman for many years and Andy Murray recently, they want a winner! A few days into the tournament, there are high hopes for fourth seed, Andy Murray, who hails from Dunblane, Scotland, and has accepted the support from the “English” crowds at Wimbledon and downplayed his “Scottish” identity. On the women’s side, the biggest hopes for the future have been focused on Laura Robson, a talented, and charming, seventeen year old left-hander, who won the Junior Girls title at Wimbledon a couple years ago at the age of fourteen.
It’s hard to appreciate the amount of media, and sponsor, attention that is lavished very year on the top British players competing at Wimbledon. The “hometown” players are featured in the media and on the main show courts at the Australian Open, French Open and U.S. Open, but the attention trained on players such as Murray and Robson during Wimbledon is orders of magnitudes higher, partly because of the prevalent and popular tabloid press in London! Nonetheless, somehow Murray has managed to reached the later rounds the past few years and again this year is many pundits’ pick to win the title. We wish all the Brits the best!
