Kvitova and Na Li Lose in First Round at U.S. Open

First-time Grand Slam champions, Na Li, the 2011 French Open champion, and Petra Kvitova, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, were both upset in the first round of the 2011 U.S. Open. Both players have played well at the U.S. Open in the past, but poorly since winning
their first Grand Slam titles. Kvitova and Li are both talented enough to win more Grand Slam titles, but their struggles since winning their first showcases exactly how hard it is to maintain the high level necessary to win not only Slams, but "all comers" week in and week out.
Consistency at the majors is ultimately what differentiates the very best players. These champions, such as Roger Federer on the men’s side the past several years, manage to not only stay healthy and motivated, but also win on a regular basis. Federer’s record of reaching Grand Slam semis and quarters is incredible and unlikely to be repeated by a man or woman in the future. Kvitova and Li will hopefully find their form before the next Grand Slam down under at the 2012 Australian Open and pick up where they left off this past spring.
