Venus Williams Withdraws From U.S. Open Because of Illness

Venus Williams was scheduled to play her second round match against the red-hot German, Sabine Lisicki, on Wednesday at the 2011 U.S. Open. Lisicki, who reached the 2011 Wimbledon semis, is herself on the comeback from a serious ankle injury last year. Hours
before the match was to be played, Venus Williams issued a statement saying that she was withdrawing from the tournament due to an illness, which was later identified as Sjogrens Syndrome. Venus had withdrawn from a lead-up tournament to the U.S. Open a few weeks ago due to a virus and said that she was recently diagnosed with Sjogrens Syndrome, which is an autoimmune disorder that affects energy levels and causes joint pain.
It’s been a very tough year for both Serena Williams and Venus Williams physically in terms of injury and illness. As much as Serena and Venus focus on winning tennis matches and titles, they have both been forced to deal with much more serious medical conditions this year, which put things into better perspective. We obviously wish Venus all the best and hope that she can become strong again and rejoin the Tour in the future.
