Four Grand Slams in 2011... Four Different Female Winners: Clijsters, Li, Kvitova and Stosur

tennis rackets

For many decades there were complaints about how the top players in women’s tennis, e.g. Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, etc. dominated “everyone else” on Tour.  Things couldn’t have been more different in women’s tennis in 2011.  In

contrast, the men’s Tour now seems to feature the top four men in most major semis, i.e. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray.  The consistency on the men’s side coupled with the uncertainty in women’s tennis and the lack of a dominant Number One ranked female player for several years has made the Grand Slams quite fascinating to watch the past couple years.

In 2011, there were four different women winning the Grand Slams, i.e. Kim Clijsters at the Australian Open, Li Na at the French Open, Petra Kvitova at Wimbledon and Samantha Stosur at the U.S. Open, each won the title for the first time although Clijsters had won the U.S. Open previously.  In fact, it was the first Grand Slam title for Li Na, Petra Kvitova and Sam Stosur.  It will be fascinating to see how each follows up her 2011 success in 2012.  Clearly, there will be more expectations and pressures, but each of them definitely has the potential and game to win multiple Grand Slam titles.
