USTA Playoff for Wildcard into 2012 Australian Open

The USTA continued its recent “tradition” of inviting eight men and eight women to compete in a single elimination playoff to determine the wildcard that the USTA receives into the main draw of the Australian Open. In return, the USTA provides Tennis Australia
with a wildcard into the men’s and women’s singles at the U.S. Open. This year, the wildcard playoff was played in mid December in Atlanta, Georgia.
The women’s field included: 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist, Melanie Oudin, CoCo Vandeweghe, Alison Riske, Jamie Hampton, Grace Min, 2011 U.S. Open Junior Girls champion, and Taylor Townsend. The men’s field included: Bobby Reynolds, 2011 NCAA Singles champion, Steve Johnson of USC, Daniel Kosakowski of UCLA, Rhyne Williams of Tennessee, Denis Kudla and Jack Sock, 18s Nationals Champion.
In the end, two residents of Boca Raton, Madison Keys and Jesse Levine won the coveted 2012 Australian Open main draw wildcards. Keys, who is sixteen years old and also won the wildcard playoff for the 2011 U.S. Open, defeated Gail Brodsky 6-3, 6-4. Levine defeated former U.S. Open semifinalist, Robby Ginepri 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.
