RECAP: Tennis Country 2012 Australian Open Tennis Predictions

Sunset

As the 2012 Australian Open tennis tournament fades into the sunset, we review our prognostications for the tournament just finished…

•    Two top ten seeds will lose in the first round

o    Australian 2011 U.S. Open champion and number six seed, Samantha Stosur, lost in the first round and a few other top ten seeds lost in the second and third rounds
•    Three qualifiers will reach the second round
o    On the women’s side, Marina Erakovic, Kai-Chen Chang, Nina Bratchikova, Paula Ormaechea, Jamie Hampton reached the second round and on the men’s side, Andrey Golubev, Florent Serra, Lukas Lacko reached the second round
•    Lleyton Hewitt will win one match
o    Lleyton had a memorable run reaching the round of 16 where he lost to eventual champion, Novak Djokovic
•    Samantha Stosur will reach the second week
o    Um, she didn’t even reach the “second day” losing her first round match…
•    Tennis dresses will dominate the women's quarters
o    Actually only three women wore dresses, i.e. Caroline Wozniacki in Stella McCartney for adidas, Maria Sharapova in Nike and Agnieska Radwanska
•    There will be a new women's champion
Victoria Azarenka became a first-time Australian Open champion, first-time Grand Slam champion and Number One ranked player for the first time
•    Three of the top four men's seeds, i.e. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray, will reach the semis
o    Impressively all four men reached the semis
•    Serena Williams will reach at least the semis
o    Serena was upset in the fourth round by Ekaterina Makarova
•    If Novak Djokovic reaches the final, he'll win the title
o    Nole did win his third Australian Open title, but it wasn’t easy…
•    The men's final will last twice as long as the women's final
o    Well, it was the longest men’s final in the open era lasting almost six hours while Azarenka beat Sharapova in straight sets in less than 90 minutes…

We “played” OK, but we know we can “play” better… and we can’t wait for Roland Garros to begin!
