Venus Williams Returns in Fed Cup Doubles Match

Venus Williams graced a tennis court again in a professional match for the first time since the 2011 U.S. Open. It may have only been a “dead doubles rubber” Federation Cup match against Belarus with her partner, Liezel Huber. Nonetheless, it was wonderful to see Venus
back playing a match and also helping to qualify herself for the United States team playing in the tennis competition at the 2012 Olympics in London. The Games will take place this summer a few weeks post-Wimbledon on the grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Venus, who disclosed at the 2011 U.S. Open that she had been diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome, clearly hopes to play singles again, but she did not announce a specific date when she would return to competition. At the same time, the allure of competing in the Olympics again, especially on the grass courts at Wimbledon, is a major motivation as Venus attempts her comeback. It’s a very challenging situation for any successful athlete to navigate the later years in his-her career as retirement looms, but when injury/illness enter the equation, it’s an even harder path to traverse. We’re pulling for you Venus!
