Victoria Azarenka Adjusting Well to View From the Top

Australian Open champion, Victoria Azarenka put on an impressive display in the Qatar Open final to defeat Samantha Stosur. As women’s tennis seems to be evolving into the post-Williams era, given the age and injuries that have affected both Venus Williams
and Serena Williams, Azarenka is an attractive face for the women’s game with a powerful set of shots to trouble all opponents on every surface. Azarenka is 17-0 this year with three tittles and clearly playing with a lot of confidence. There are definitely several other top women, who could challenge for the top spot this year, but that only makes it an exciting time for women’s tennis.
In the meantime, even though it’s only been less than a month, so far it seems that Azarenka is doing a good job of handling the pressures, attention, responsibilities and expectations that come with becoming Number One. This bodes well for women’s tennis, which has been lacking a Number One ranked player, who not only “deserved” to hold that mantle in everyone’s eyes, but also didn’t seem overwhelmed by the spotlight. With the jam-packed spring summer schedule between May and September featuring the French Open, Wimbledon, Olympics and U.S. Open, it’s unlikely that one women will capture all the majors this year, but Azarenka definitely has a strong chance at each of them.
