Prince Charles Returns to Wimbledon

Royalty returned to Wimbledon (again) this year. Prince Charles, who hadn't been to Wimbledon since 1970, and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, sat in the Royal Box on Centre Court to watch Roger Federer defeat Italian Fabio Fognini in straight sets. It had
been a long time since Prince Charles attended Wimbledon, but Camilla was at the tennis matches last year. As Federer and Fognini walked onto Centre Court, they turned and bowed to Prince Charles and Camilla, who waved and smiled back at them. After the match, Federer had a chance to chat briefly with Prince Charles as well.
There has been a definite royal presence at The Championships the past few years which is a welcome change for the tennis tournament, which had seen Princess Diana many times in the past. Prince Williams and his new bride, Kate, graced Centre Court last year and Queen Elizabeth attended Wimbledon two years ago. It is sad that the players no longer routinely turn and bow to the Royal Box as they enter and exit Centre. However, history is still a wonderful part of Wimbledon and it definitely adds to the atmosphere when royalty is present.
