RECAP: Tennis Country 2012 Wimbledon Predictions

Sunset

As The Championships, Wimbledon 2012 fade into the sunset, we review our prognostications for the tournament just finished…

•    A wildcard will reach the second week
o    Well… a wildcard doubles team, Jonathan Marray, from Liverpool, England, and Frederik Nielsen, won the Gentlemen’s doubles title!
•    One of the defending champions will lose in the first week
o    Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova both reached the semis before losing to Roger Federer and Serena Williams, respectively
•    Serena Williams will reach at least the semis, but Venus Williams will lose in the first week
o    Venus Williams lost in the first round… Serena won the singles tile and they teamed to win the doubles title!
•    Only one of the top four men, i.e. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray will reach the final
o    Roger Federer beat Andy Murray in a historic Gentlemen’s singles final
•    More Americans than Spaniards will reach the second week
o    Serena Williams, Mardy Fish, Brian Baker reached the last 16 while David Ferrer was the sole Spaniard
•    Eight of the top eight seeded men and women will reach the quarters
o    Five of the top eight men and five of the top eight women reached the quarters
•    Roger Federer will win the “best-dressed” award
o    Federer’s trim purple and green pencil thin trim on his Nike shirt collar did stand out as stylish and simple, albeit in a classic way
•    The French Open champions, Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal, will reach at least the semis, but neither will win the title
o    Maria Sharapova lost in the fourth round while Rafael Nadal was upset in the second round
•    The finals will feature all two-handed backhands
o    Roger Federer carried the flag, yet again, for the one-handed backhand… let there be more in the future!
•    Rain will NOT disrupt the men’s final!
o    Yikes, rain did stop play in the Gentlemen’s final…  and then the match resumed under the Centre Court roof for the first time ever!

Sigh… we had a tough tournament, but we’ll try again at the Olympics!!!
