The Championships, Wimbledon 2012: Fashion Review

As the exciting second week is underway at The Championships, Wimbledon 2012, we look back at the “traditional” all-white tennis outfits worn during the first week on the green grass lawns at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Given the fact that the
major tennis label designers are limited to the all-white attire, the focus is inevitably on the subtle color piping on the various tennis outfits. As has been the case at recent Grand Slams, Nike and adidas are the dominant tennis brands worn by the top men and women at The Championships, Wimbledon.
On the women’s side, World Number One, Maria Sharapova, and Serena Williams are wearing Nike dresses with subtle color piping, i.e. lime green for Maria and purple for Serena. 2011 Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, is also wearing a Nike top and skirt with aquamarine colored piping. Kim Clijsters, playing in her final Wimbledon, is wearing a basic white shirt and skirt with a gold-colored Fila logo. Adidas decked out Ana Ivanovic in a white dress with red striping while Caroline Wozniacki, who is wearing Stella McCartney for adidas, wore a white dress with some lace-looking patterned design across the front. Venus Williams wore her EleVen designed dress with a silver logo.
On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic is wearing his new Uniqlo designs, which feature very skinny green and purple piping. Meanwhile, Nike gave Roger Federer a classic collared white shirt with purple and green lines around the collar while Rafael Nadal wore a collarless white shirt with some dark red patterned strips across the shoulders. Local hometown favorite, Andy Murray, is wearing adidas with subtle red stripes and piping on the shirt and shorts.
All in all, the tennis outfit designs on display at Wimbledon are classically simple and tasteful with no major fashion statements being made. Our favorite is the purple and green pencil thin lines on Roger Federer’s collar.
