The Championships, Wimbledon 2012 - Ladies Quarterfinals Preview

The rain caused a bit of havoc with the schedule on the best day in pro tennis, i.e. the second Monday at Wimbledon when all the men’s and women’s round of sixteen matches are played, but fortunately all the women’s matches were finished. The big upset in
the round of sixteen was that Maria Sharapova lost to Sabine Lisicki in straight sets (Sharapova beat Lisicki in the semis last year) There are some intriguing match-ups for the women in the “last eight” which feature players from seven different countries, yet again illustrating the global strength of pro tennis.
For the first time in the Open era, two German women will face off in the quarters when Angelique Kerber, the eighth seed and quarterfinalist at the 2012 French Open and semifinalist at the 2011 U.S. Open, plays countrywoman, Sabine Lisicki. Kerber is 3-0 versus Lisicki, who reached the Wimbledon semis in 2011, but hasn’t progressed past the round of 16 at the other Grand Slams. Other match-ups feature Pole, Agnieszka Radwanska, who could become Number One at the end of the tournament, in her third quarterfinal at Wimbledon against Russian, Maria Kirilenko. Radwanska is 5-2 versus Kirilenko, who reached the quarters at the 2010 Australian Open. American, Serena Williams, is 2-0 versus 2011 champion, Czech, Petra Kvitova, but they haven’t played since the 2010 Wimbledon semis. Austrian, Tamira Paszek, who reached the Wimbledon quarters in 2011 faces Victoria Azarenka from Belarus, who beat her in the quarters last year. Azarenka could also regain the Number One ranking at the end of the tournament.
Predictions… Kerber, Radwanska, Williams and Azarenka reach the semis…
